BLAIRSVILLE, Ga – Tragedy stuck on Tuesday afternoon when a camper exploded at the Rivers Edge RV Park. The blast and associated fire injured five people.

Reports started coming in around 1 p.m. asking if anyone heard a loud blast/explosion in the Choestoe area or southern end of the county.

Union County Fire Department and EMA (UCFD/EMA) received the initial call at 12:45 p.m. of a camper explosion with people still inside the vehicle. UCFD/ EMA stations one, three, and four were on site to stop the fire. They did confirm that the camper exploded, but at this time, propane can’t be determined as the cause. An investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire with local and state fire marshal investigators.

Once they arrived, they saw the unit completely engulfed in flames and realized five people needed emergency care. Two people were inside the camper and by standers pulled them out of the fire. Two of the people involved experienced minor injuries, but three were life flighted to Grady in Atlanta.

For the sake of those involved and their families, FYN won’t be publishing the names of the RV owners.

UCFD/EMA, Union County Sheriff’s Office, Union General EMS, and AirLife responded to the scene.
