FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A project that could reshape metro Atlanta’s northern suburbs took a major step forward this week as Forsyth County commissioners approved key measures to advance “The Gathering at South Forsyth,” a proposed $3 billion mixed-use development centered around a potential NHL-ready arena.

Developers say the project, located near Ga. 400 and Union Hill Road, would transform more than 100 acres into a vibrant entertainment and residential hub — complete with restaurants, retail space, hotels, offices, parks, and an 18,000-seat indoor arena designed to attract professional hockey back to Georgia.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to bring a world-class entertainment district to Forsyth County,” said Vince Dooley Jr., managing partner of The Gathering’s development group. “Our goal is to create something that drives economic growth, creates jobs, and builds community pride.”

The arena, if approved by the National Hockey League, could serve as home to a future expansion or relocated NHL team. Georgia has not hosted an NHL franchise since the Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg in 2011.
