DADE COUNTY, Ga. — The principal of Dade County High School has been arrested on two counts of improper sexual contact by an employee, agent or foster parent, prompting an ongoing criminal investigation and his placement on administrative leave.
Joseph “Brent” Cooper was arrested by the Dade County Sheriff’s Office following an investigation that began after the school’s resource officer received information about possible misconduct, according to authorities.
Cooper faces two counts of violating O.C.G.A. 16-6-5.1, which addresses improper sexual contact by an employee, agent or foster parent.
Following the arrest, Dade County School District Superintendent Josh Ingle notified families that the district was cooperating with law enforcement.
Cooper was immediately placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
In a letter to families, Ingle said the school’s two assistant principals would oversee daily operations, with additional support from district leadership.
He also indicated he would work with the Board of Education to determine the district’s next steps.
The district said its priority remains maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment for students and staff.
According to additional media reports, investigators executed a search warrant covering the Dade County High School campus.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reportedly assisted with the investigation, while the Dade County Sheriff’s Office remains the lead agency. Authorities have also indicated there is no current threat of violence to students or staff.
Investigators have not disclosed details about the allegations, including when or where the alleged incidents occurred or whether students were involved.
The sheriff’s office has described the case as active and developing.
Anyone with additional information or who believes they may have been a victim is encouraged to contact the Dade County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at tips@dadesheriff.com or 706-657-3233.
