Rabun County Man Charged with Aggravated Animal Cruelty Following Investigation

RABUN COUNTY, Ga. — A Mountain City man has been arrested on a charge of aggravated animal cruelty following a month-long investigation into the death of an animal, according to the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Mark Gerrells said the investigation began on June 10, 2026, after the sheriff’s office received a report of suspected aggravated animal cruelty.

Over the following several weeks, deputies interviewed witnesses, reviewed evidence, and worked alongside Rabun County Animal Control. According to investigators, the investigation established probable cause that an animal had been subjected to repeated acts of cruelty that resulted in its death.

On July 7, investigators obtained arrest and search warrants. The following day, deputies executed the search warrant at a residence in Mountain City, where they recovered evidence and exhumed animal remains believed to be connected to the case.

The remains were transported to the University of Georgia Veterinary Diagnostics Laboratory for forensic examination. Authorities said the final forensic results are still pending.

As a result of the investigation, Wacho McCluney Sr., 46, of Mountain City, was arrested and charged with Aggravated Animal Cruelty.

Sheriff Gerrells emphasized that cases involving animal abuse are taken seriously.

“Animal cruelty is a serious crime, and I am committed to ensuring these cases are thoroughly investigated and that those responsible are held accountable,” Gerrells said. “I appreciate the efforts of the deputies, Rabun County Animal Control, Mountain City Police Department, and everyone who assisted in bringing this case forward.”

The investigation remains active and ongoing, and no additional information has been released.
