Calhoun Man Charged With DUI After Crashing Into Fire Engine

GORDON COUNTY, Ga. — A Calhoun man was arrested Thursday afternoon after authorities say he crashed into a Gordon County fire engine and fled the scene.

The collision happened around 1 p.m. Aug. 20 at the intersection of Interstate 75 and U.S. Highway 41. According to authorities, the fire engine was stopped in traffic when it was struck by a passenger vehicle.

Investigators said the driver of the car left the scene following the collision. A passenger was reportedly attempting to get out of the vehicle as the driver fled.

A Gordon County Fire officer located the vehicle a few minutes later at a nearby apartment complex and notified law enforcement. Calhoun police officers and Gordon County sheriff’s deputies responded and found the vehicle with extensive front- and rear-end damage and deployed airbags.

Authorities identified the driver as 31-year-old Jacob Alan Razo of Calhoun and took him into custody. Officials said Razo appeared to be intoxicated during his interaction with law enforcement.

A woman who told deputies she had been a passenger in the vehicle said she was attempting to get out after Razo struck the fire engine but that he drove away from the scene.

The Georgia State Patrol investigated the crash. Razo was taken to jail and charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident and additional traffic offenses.

Authorities said Razo has previously been arrested in the jurisdiction on charges including obstruction of law enforcement officers.
